# What is an EMPF file?

> Canonical page: https://empfpreview.com/what-is-an-empf-file/

- A `.empf` file is a eufyMake project file, used in eufyMake workflows (for example with the eufyMake E1 UV printer)
- Windows does not understand the format, so Explorer shows generic gray icons for `.empf` files
- eufyMake Studio opens, edits and prints `.empf` projects; EMPF Preview adds local thumbnails, quick preview and PNG export

## Why does Windows show generic EMPF icons?

Windows only renders thumbnails for formats it knows. `.empf` is a eufyMake-specific format, so without a helper every project looks identical in Explorer.

## Common questions

- **Can Windows open EMPF files?** Not natively. Use eufyMake Studio for editing/printing, or EMPF Preview for local viewing and thumbnails.
- **Can I convert EMPF to PNG?** EMPF Preview exports PNG previews from the app or the command line.
- **Do encrypted EMPF files work?** Yes — regular and encrypted `.empf` files both get thumbnails and previews (encrypted support fixed in version 2.6.11); processing stays local.
- **Is local preview safe?** Yes — EMPF Preview processes files locally on your PC; nothing is uploaded.
- **Does EMPF Preview replace Studio?** No. It complements Studio for local preview, thumbnails and export only.
